Font Overview
Mrs Saint Delafield is part of the Charles Bluemlein Script Collection, which vividly captures the charm of American hand-lettering and calligraphy at its peak. From the early 1930s through World War II, there were roughly 200 professional hand-lettering artists in New York City alone. The rise of phototypesetting led to the gradual decline of this craft, and it all but vanished with the arrival of digital type.
The Bluemlein typefaces were created and compiled in a truly distinctive way: Bluemlein first gathered a wide range of handwritten signatures, then refined and constructed full alphabets from them—a fascinating exploration of lettering art. Since the finished letterforms differed greatly from the original signatures, these new scripts were given fictional names and later featured and promoted in Higgins Ink catalogs.
Designer Alejandro Paul and the Sudtipos foundry have digitally revived and expanded the Bluemlein script collection to meet the needs of modern designers, breathing new life into these classics. The team worked to faithfully preserve the spirit of the original designs while retaining the fictional names Bluemlein gave them decades ago.
