Big Shoulders is an extended family of condensed American Gothic variable fonts, created exclusively for the Chicago Design System and the people of Chicago. Its sleek, elongated sans-serif forms draw inspiration from Chicago’s rich heritage of rail transit, grassroots social movements and dance culture.

As the primary typeface of the Chicago Design System, Big Shoulders serves as a visual emblem for the city and its residents, delivering a unified and consistent typographic identity across Chicago.

Big Shoulders Stencil pays homage to Chicago’s labor culture and history of activism. Tailored for relevant use cases, it carries forward the city’s distinctive visual character.
Big Shoulders Inline standardizes the style of local folk typefaces commonly seen at Chicago’s festivals. Its dynamic inline strokes take cues from house parties hosted by Chicago’s African American communities and local LGBTQ+ dance scenes — a cultural phenomenon that first emerged in the early 1980s.
